about

By 1993 the Sheffield music scene had gone through some major changes since Charlie Collins and Peter Hope had first started working together in The Box in 1982. Back then the post-punk and Industrial scenes were spawning numerous experimental bands which drew inspiration from hugely diverse musics often incorporating elements of jazz with an avant-garde punk attitude. Charlie Collins, renowned as a saxophonist, had been a familiar face in the free and improvised music scene prior to his early ’80's work with Clock DVA and continued to be so along with Bass Tone Trap’s Pete Infanti who was very much the go-to drummer as the improv scene expanded.

All three had worked together in The Bone Orchestra during the mid 80’s and then gone their separate ways as Sheffield's musical terrain altered yet again with the advent of House and new potentials for experimental and independent music. In ’93 Collins started working on ideas which would reunite the trio and, once more, take a sideways step from the prevailing styles of the day.

Although only in existence during ’93 Collins/Hope/Infanti managed to write and record a concise album’s worth of material which adopted an instrumentally minimal approach and saw Collins playing keyboards and percussion in addition to wind instruments. Hope’s frenetic vocals had been reined in and Infanti’s intelligently responsive drumming allowed for more fluid and organic composition.

Changes in personal circumstances meant the trio were unable to continue, although the Hope/Collins partnership carried on throughout the 90’s as Flex 13. Recently unearthed from Hope's vaults ‘Impossible Works’ showcases these three significant Sheffield musicians in full creative flow.
