about

I've been sitting on this one for more than half my life! My old mate Derek Saw and me did numerous practice sessions up at his house in Walkley, Sheffield (along with listening to brilliant old blues and ska records) before finally recording it onto Revox 2-track with Russ Deluxe on a freezing cold day at our Universe Works rehearsal room.

It was 1989 and the city was riding the House revolution but we were definitely in the mind frame of a One Room Country Shack. We weren't looking for slick or polish, we were after 'that feeling' which so many of our favourite records had in bucket loads. Of course it didn't fit with anything that was happening at the time (or maybe even anytime) but that was of little importance. What we had was a bunch of good songs with huge heart and a real passion for what we were trying to do.

And so these tracks have hidden away on a cassette for 33 years, getting brought out every now and then but never quite seeing the full light of day until now. I finally got myself a top-notch cassette deck and realised these songs had stood the test of time & then some. I still reckon these are some of my favourite songs i've ever written and love the mistakes and stumbles and the whole timeless feel.

Derek was always an inspiring musician to play with and be around Saw played saxophone in The Bone Orchestra with me and has gone on to play trombone, trumpet and all manner of other woodwinds, he's an awesome harmonica player and his guitar work is rich with authenticity. Very much part of the Sheffield improvising and jazz scene he's still out there doing his thing

It really is pretty special to finally get these recordings out. i hope you enjoy them and find yourself singing along!
